tropibasic skull

tropibasic skull
a skull with eyes set close together, found in most Teleostei. Also called tropitrabic skull since it is the narrow distance between trabeculae which fuse early in development by means of a transverse commissure, the common trabecule, which later forms the nasal and interorbital septa. The skull is arched and vaulted, laterally flattened and usually much higher than broad. The endochondral floor is narrow and the brain is relatively short since it ends at the interorbital septum instead of the ethmoid block. A more advanced condition than in a platybasic skull, q.v
